France marked the 81st anniversary of Victory in Europe Day on Friday, May 8, 2026, honoring the official end of World War II on the European continent and paying tribute to the millions of lives lost during one of history’s deadliest conflicts.
May 8, 1945, remains a defining date in world history, symbolizing the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany and the end of more than five years of devastating war in Europe. The act of capitulation was first signed during the night of May 6–7, 1945, in Reims, before being officially confirmed in Berlin. The agreement established the cessation of hostilities effective on May 8, 1945, at 11:01 p.m.
Since 1981, May 8 has been observed as a national public holiday in France, dedicated to preserving the memory of World War II, honoring veterans, resistance fighters, and all those who contributed to the liberation of Europe.
This Friday, in the city of Mâcon, Dominique Dufour, Prefect of Saône-et-Loire, participated in the official commemorative ceremonies marking the 81st anniversary of the 1945 Victory. He was joined by elected officials, civil and military authorities, veterans’ associations, flag bearers, students, and local residents.
The ceremony featured several symbolic moments, including wreath-laying tributes, military honors, the sounding of memorial bugle calls, the reading of the ministerial message, and the singing of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise.
A particularly meaningful moment was the presentation of the “Flames of Hope” by schoolchildren and university students, highlighting the role of younger generations in preserving historical memory and promoting peace.
The commemoration served as both a solemn tribute to those who sacrificed during World War II and a reminder of the enduring importance of peace, democracy, and international solidarity.
As France reflects on the lessons of history, the ceremonies reaffirm the nation’s commitment to remembrance and to ensuring that the tragedies of war are never forgotten.
