An explosion and major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday left several people dead and others injured, Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed, as emergency crews worked to contain the blaze after strong winds carried flames beyond the military facility.
McGuinty confirmed the fatalities and injuries but did not disclose the number of casualties or the circumstances surrounding the explosion, describing the situation as “active and delicate.” Authorities have not confirmed whether weapons or ammunition were involved.
The Canadian Armed Forces said the fire was first reported at approximately 4 p.m. local time on a training range before spreading beyond the training area’s boundaries.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating the incident, while military personnel and federal, provincial and municipal authorities are coordinating emergency response efforts.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said strong winds had pushed the fire beyond the base perimeter, prompting emergency crews from multiple jurisdictions to respond. In its latest update, municipal authorities said the wildfire south of the community was being held, with a fire watch remaining in place to monitor conditions and respond to any renewed threat.
No evacuation orders had been issued, but residents were urged to avoid the affected area and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.
McGuinty said the nearby community of Wainwright was providing hospital and firefighting assistance. He pledged to release further information as it became available.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as serious and said federal authorities were working closely with provincial and local officials. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also described the fire as significant and tragic, expressing concern for the military personnel affected.
Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan said the military was fully engaged with authorities at all levels. She expressed concern for service members, their families and the surrounding community.
Canadian lawmaker Dane Lloyd had earlier reported receiving information about significant casualties following the explosion and fire.
The RCMP deployed multiple resources after receiving reports of a fire in the training area shortly after 4 p.m. Police said their initial emergency response was winding down, although personnel remained available to assist if required.
Located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is one of the country’s major military training facilities. The cause of the explosion and the full extent of the casualties and damage remain under investigation.
