ISTANBUL, July 15 — Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has announced plans to establish three military-linked Nahal outposts in northern Gaza, while defending the extensive destruction caused during Israel’s military operations in the enclave.

During a visit to northern Gaza, broadcast by Israel’s Channel 14 on Monday, Katz said the destruction of large parts of the territory was the result of what he described as a “deliberate policy” aimed at eliminating security threats.

Asked about his reaction to the widespread devastation, Katz responded that it gave him “a good feeling,” stating that Israel had shifted away from conducting temporary military incursions.

“Instead of entering and leaving, the army is inside, the terrorists are outside, and the houses are destroyed,” Katz said, describing what he characterized as a new operational approach.

According to Channel 14, Katz also outlined plans to establish three Nahal outposts at locations where Israeli settlements existed before Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005. Nahal outposts are military-linked settlement units that have historically served as the foundation for future civilian communities.

Katz said the proposed outposts were intended to strengthen Israeli security and reinforce control over northern Gaza, arguing that the move would enhance the protection of nearby Israeli communities.

The announcement comes as military operations in Gaza continue. According to Palestinian authorities, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 173,000 injured since the conflict escalated in October 2023. Palestinian officials also say approximately 91% of Gaza’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed during the fighting. These figures have not been independently verified.
