223rd Anniversary of Toussaint Louverture

April 7, 2026 marks the 223rd anniversary of Toussaint Louverture, an iconic figure in Haiti’s history and a major leader in the fight against slavery.
Born in 1743 in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, then considered one of the wealthiest territories in the Western Hemisphere and known as the “Pearl of the Antilles,” Louverture was born into slavery. Freed at the age of 33, he rose socially to become a plantation owner.
Committed to the emancipation movement, he quickly established himself as a leading military strategist during the Haitian Revolution. Between 1791 and 1802, he led revolutionary forces and confronted the French, Spanish, and British armies amid intense colonial rivalries.
In 1801, Toussaint Louverture was proclaimed Governor for Life of Saint-Domingue, asserting decisive political autonomy. However, the rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte in France marked a turning point, as he moved to reinstate slavery, which had been abolished in 1793.
Captured in 1802, Louverture was deported to France, where he was imprisoned. He died in captivity in 1803 at the age of 60. Despite his death, the struggle continued with determination, carried forward by his companions and successors.
On January 1, 1804, under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haiti’s independence was proclaimed. The nation became the first independent Black republic in the world, marking the definitive abolition of slavery on its territory.
Today, Toussaint Louverture remains a founding figure of the Haitian nation, alongside Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Henri Christophe, and Alexandre Pétion. His legacy continues to inspire struggles for freedom, justice, and human dignity around the world.
