Beijing has issued a stern warning to the United States, Japan, and the Philippines, cautioning the nations against “playing with fire” as they launched large-scale joint military exercises today.
The warning comes as thousands of troops from the three allied nations commenced their annual military drills, a move China views as a strategic provocation in the increasingly contested Indo-Pacific region.
Addressing a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun expressed sharp criticism of the trilateral cooperation.
”We wish to remind the countries concerned that blindly binding themselves together in the name of security will only be akin to playing with fire,” Guo stated. He further warned that such actions would “ultimately backfire upon themselves.”
The drills represent a deepening of military ties between Washington, Tokyo, and Manila, aimed at bolstering regional maritime security. However, Beijing remains steadfast in its position that such alliances undermine regional stability and infringe upon its sovereign interests.
As geopolitical friction intensifies in the South China Sea, this latest rhetoric from the Chinese Foreign Ministry underscores the fragile state of diplomacy among the major powers in the Pacific.
