Starmer Under Pressure as Political Turmoil Overshadows Britain’s Royal Ceremony

UNIPA News(London)-The opening day of the British Parliament turned into a rare blend of royal grandeur and political drama. While King Charles III formally presented the government’s legislative agenda, the spotlight remained firmly on the growing uncertainty surrounding Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership.

Discontent within the Labour Party has been intensifying steadily. Amid this situation, strong speculation has emerged that Health Secretary Wes Streeting may soon resign from the cabinet and launch a leadership challenge against Starmer. Although the two leaders held a brief meeting on Wednesday, neither disclosed what was discussed. However, the Prime Minister’s Office insisted that Streeting still enjoys Starmer’s full confidence.

Starmer’s position weakened significantly after Labour suffered heavy setbacks in recent local and regional elections. Analysts believe that if those results are repeated in a national election, Labour could lose power by 2029. The party lost support on multiple fronts — from the right-wing anti-immigration Reform UK, the Green Party, and nationalist parties in Scotland and Wales.

Labour had secured a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. But since taking office, the party’s popularity has declined sharply. Economic difficulties, policy missteps, a perceived lack of clear direction from the prime minister, and several controversial decisions have all contributed to criticism of Starmer’s leadership. In particular, the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the U.K. ambassador to Washington despite his past ties to Jeffrey Epstein has continued to fuel controversy.

Meanwhile, a section of Labour lawmakers has urged Starmer to announce a timetable for stepping down. Although no senior figure has formally challenged him yet, more than 100 MPs have signed a letter backing the prime minister, saying that “this is not the time” for a leadership contest.

Speaking to Sky News, Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn said, “Starmer is a serious politician, and these are extremely serious times. He should be allowed to continue doing his job.”

In his address, King Charles III said the government would take important steps to strengthen the economy, energy security, and national stability. He also referred to the global impact of the wars in Ukraine and Iran. The government’s plans include easing the cost-of-living crisis, strengthening ties with the European Union, and making it easier to develop new energy infrastructure.

Referring to recent attacks on the Jewish community, the King pledged urgent action against antisemitism and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting “the British values of decency, tolerance, and mutual respect.”

Although the King arrived at Parliament from Buckingham Palace in a traditional horse-drawn carriage and delivered the ceremonial speech with full royal pageantry, the key question dominating British politics remains: can Keir Starmer survive the growing pressure on his leadership? And even if he does, will he still have the authority needed to implement the government’s ambitious agenda?
