UNIPA News(Kiev) 29 May 2026:A Russian drone reportedly crashed into a residential apartment building in Romania, intensifying security concerns in the NATO member state as the war in neighboring Ukraine continues.
Romanian authorities said the unmanned aerial vehicle struck an apartment complex in the country’s southeastern region close to the Ukrainian border. The impact damaged parts of the building, although no deaths or serious injuries were immediately reported. Emergency teams and security personnel quickly sealed off the area while investigators collected debris from the site.
Initial assessments suggest the drone may have crossed into Romanian airspace during military operations linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Officials have not yet determined whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
Residents in the area described scenes of panic following the explosion-like impact. Several locals told Romanian media that they were awakened by a loud noise before emergency sirens and police units arrived at the scene. Some families temporarily evacuated the building as a precaution.
“We heard a massive sound and felt the building shake,” one resident was quoted as saying by local broadcasters. Others expressed concern that the war is moving dangerously close to civilian neighborhoods inside NATO territory.
Romanian President called the incident “extremely serious” and said authorities are working closely with NATO allies to assess the situation and strengthen border surveillance measures.
NATO officials also acknowledged the development, reiterating that any incident affecting the security of alliance members would be monitored carefully.
Since the Russia-Ukraine war began, fragments of drones and missiles have repeatedly been discovered near Romania’s border regions along the Danube River and the Black Sea. Security analysts warn that intensified aerial attacks in southern Ukraine are increasing the risk of unintended cross-border incidents involving neighboring NATO countries.
Romanian authorities said forensic examinations and intelligence assessments are ongoing, and no final conclusion regarding the drone’s exact origin or mission has yet been announced.
