UNIPA News (Bolivia)20 June-The Bolivian government has declared a state of emergency following weeks of anti-government protests and road blockades that have intensified into a broader political crisis across the country.

President Rodrigo Paz announced the measure in a televised address, citing growing disruptions caused by demonstrations backed by workers’ unions and farmers. Protesters have demanded the president’s resignation amid rising living costs and mounting economic pressures.

The declaration authorizes the deployment of military forces to help restore access to major transportation routes and maintain public order nationwide.

The protests and blockades, which have persisted for nearly 50 days, have severely affected economic activity and the movement of goods and services. Authorities reported shortages of food, fuel and medical supplies in several parts of the country as a result of the disruptions.

Addressing the nation, Paz said the government could no longer allow road blockades to hinder daily life and essential services. He stated that the emergency measures were intended to restore mobility and ensure access to work, education, healthcare and basic supplies.

The political unrest comes amid growing public frustration over economic challenges, with demonstrations continuing across multiple regions. Authorities have not indicated how long the state of emergency will remain in effect as efforts continue to reopen blocked routes and stabilize the situation.
