Al Jazeera Media Network has called on the international community and legal institutions to hold Israeli officials accountable following the killing of its cameraman, Ahmed Washah, in an Israeli strike in central Gaza.
In a statement issued after the incident, the network said Washah, a cameraman for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was killed when a house in the Al-Bureij refugee camp was targeted.
Al Jazeera condemned the killing and said Washah’s brother, Mohammed Washah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was also killed in an Israeli strike two months earlier.
The network stated that Ahmed Washah’s death brings the number of Al Jazeera Media Network employees killed in Gaza since October 2023 to 12.
Al Jazeera accused Israeli forces of continuing to target its journalists and staff operating in Gaza and renewed its call for urgent international action to hold those responsible accountable.
The network urged relevant legal institutions to adopt measures aimed at preventing attacks on journalists and ensuring the protection of media personnel working in conflict zones.
Al Jazeera said it intends to pursue all available legal avenues to prosecute those responsible for the killings while reaffirming its commitment to continuing coverage from Gaza.
According to figures released by the Government Media Office in Gaza, 262 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023.
In a statement issued on May 3, the office said the number reflects what it described as a systematic effort to silence Palestinian media voices and restrict the flow of information from the territory.
Israeli authorities have not immediately commented on the latest allegations.
