UNIPA News(Washington D.C)22 June- The United States and Iran have agreed to a 60-day roadmap toward a final agreement following the first round of high-level direct talks at the Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland, mediators Qatar and Pakistan announced early Monday.
According to a joint statement issued after the 100-minute meeting in Burgenstock, the discussions were held in a “positive and constructive atmosphere” and resulted in the establishment of a mechanism for further technical negotiations.
The US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, and the Iranian delegation, headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, discussed implementation measures for the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed on June 17.
As part of the mediation framework, the parties agreed to establish a High Level Committee to provide political oversight of the negotiations. The committee will receive regular updates from chief negotiators and supervise specialized working groups focused on Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions-related issues and dispute resolution mechanisms.
The mediators said the committee had endorsed a roadmap aimed at securing a final agreement within 60 days, paving the way for the immediate start of additional technical discussions.
To reduce the risk of escalation, the parties also agreed to establish a direct communication channel for the duration outlined in the memorandum. The mechanism is intended to prevent incidents and miscommunication and support the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
In a separate development, the participants agreed to create a de-confliction cell involving the United States, Iran and Lebanon, with facilitation by Qatar and Pakistan, to monitor compliance with the cessation of military operations in Lebanon.
Technical talks are scheduled to continue throughout the week at the Burgenstock resort, covering all outstanding issues.
Qatar and Pakistan said they would continue efforts to maintain a constructive negotiating environment and expressed appreciation to both parties for their commitment to diplomacy and a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
