UNIPA News,24 June(Muscat)-Oman has announced the opening of a temporary maritime corridor for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, citing its responsibility toward one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes and its commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation.

According to the Oman News Agency, the measure was introduced in coordination with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and follows recent diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran aimed at maintaining navigation safety and regional stability.

Omani authorities said the temporary corridor will be available to all vessels based on coordinates issued by the IMO and relevant Omani agencies. Ships intending to use the route will be required to coordinate with the international maritime body.

The announcement comes amid ongoing consultations between Oman and Iran regarding future navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, the two countries agreed to establish a joint working group tasked with discussing the future management of navigation in the waterway, maritime services, and related operational matters in coordination with other Gulf states.

The discussions are being conducted under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which calls for dialogue between Iran and Oman on the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz.

Under the memorandum, Iran committed to facilitating the safe and toll-free passage of commercial vessels between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for a period of 60 days, with commercial shipping activities resuming immediately.

The broader understanding between Iran and the United States, mediated by Pakistan, was announced on June 14 and formally entered into force on June 18 following electronic signatures by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement includes provisions related to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional de-escalation measures.
