UNIPA News|| 29 June-A newly announced framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, reached during US-hosted negotiations in Washington, has drawn criticism over its potential implications for Lebanon’s sovereignty and future security arrangements.

According to the reported framework, the agreement includes language aimed at “ending the conflict” between Lebanon and Israel, raising concerns that it could pave the way for broader political arrangements beyond a limited security understanding.

The reported terms also appear to link Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory to the disarmament of Hezbollah, without specifying a clear timetable for the withdrawal. The framework further calls on Lebanon to refrain from hostile actions in international political and legal forums as part of confidence-building measures.

Lebanese officials have described the agreement as reinforcing national sovereignty, while emphasizing the state’s authority over its territory. However, questions have emerged over the government’s ability to implement commitments related to Hezbollah’s military activities, given the country’s longstanding political and security challenges.

The agreement has also faced opposition from Hezbollah, which has reportedly rejected the framework and denied its validity, highlighting the difficulties the Lebanese government may face in implementing its provisions.

The negotiations were conducted under US mediation, with the Lebanese delegation seeking security guarantees and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory while balancing domestic political pressures and broader regional developments.

The framework agreement comes amid continuing tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border and ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce the risk of further military escalation.
