UNIPA News|| 04 July-The United States has warned Poland that Russia could be preparing a military provocation aimed at testing NATO’s resolve and undermining Western support for Ukraine, according to a report citing Polish media outlet Onet.

The reported intelligence outlines several possible scenarios, including drone or missile strikes on critical infrastructure, simulated air attacks, or a limited cross-border incursion by Russian or Belarusian forces designed to trigger a political crisis without escalating into full-scale conflict.

According to the report, U.S. officials have repeatedly shared intelligence assessments with Warsaw regarding potential Russian activities targeting NATO’s eastern flank. One source close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki said Washington has consistently informed Poland about possible Russian plans involving conventional military actions in the region.

The reported objective of such operations would be to create divisions within NATO and increase pressure on Western governments to reduce or suspend military assistance to Ukraine.

Among the scenarios discussed are attacks on energy infrastructure, airspace violations intended to prompt Poland to activate its air defenses, and hybrid operations along the border. The report also cited the possibility of a limited ground incursion involving Russian or Belarusian troops, which Moscow could later describe as an accidental border crossing or a rescue operation.

Polish officials reportedly believe Russia may seek a diplomatic resolution following such an incident, allowing Moscow to claim a political success if NATO members avoid a military response. The report added that Russia could potentially seek concessions, including a reduction in Western military support for Ukraine.

According to the report, multiple security and government sources in Poland and the Baltic region assessed the threat of a Russian provocation against Poland or another NATO member on the alliance’s eastern flank as credible. One Baltic security official reportedly said such scenarios have been discussed in Moscow and could later be falsely attributed to Ukraine.

Officials said any potential ground operation would most likely originate from Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave or neighboring Belarus.

A senior official in Poland’s Defense Ministry acknowledged that the possibility of a Russian provocation exists but said Poland has already conducted military exercises intended to demonstrate that any attack on NATO territory would trigger a strong alliance response.

The report also said recent U.S.-led naval exercises in Latvia were aimed at reinforcing deterrence and signaling NATO’s readiness to defend its eastern members. German Air Force chief Holger Neumann recently reiterated that Germany would defend “every inch” of NATO territory if necessary.
