UNIPA News,11 July(London)-Alison Arngrim has returned to the Little House on the Prairie franchise, appearing in Netflix’s reboot more than four decades after the original television series concluded.
Arngrim, 64, originally portrayed Nellie Oleson in 104 episodes across eight seasons of the classic series, which aired from 1974 to 1982. In the new adaptation, she takes on a different role, playing a frontier woman named Ida, who appears in the second episode.
Ida is introduced as a mysterious woman living in the woods who encounters the Ingalls girls during their search for John Edwards. Along with a group of frontier women, she claims to know Edwards’ whereabouts and tells the girls he will return soon. The encounter becomes tense when Ida grabs Laura, prompting the young girl to bite her arm before escaping.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Arngrim said she was offered the role only weeks before filming began in Winnipeg, Canada. She described Ida as “a crazy lady in the woods” and a forest drifter, adding that the unusual character immediately appealed to her.
The actress also reflected on her long association with the franchise and the lasting popularity of Nellie Oleson. She said the cast began attracting widespread public recognition during the third season of the original series and noted that fans continue to approach her decades later to discuss her portrayal of the iconic antagonist.
Commenting on Nellie’s enduring legacy, Arngrim said the character was designed to be a villain but has since become one of the franchise’s most memorable figures.
Arngrim also highlighted differences between the original production and the Netflix reboot, praising the new series’ emphasis on historically detailed costumes. She revealed that extensive makeup was used to transform her appearance for the role of Ida, including artificial dirt, painted teeth, and weathered skin to reflect the harsh conditions of frontier life.
The Netflix reboot marks Arngrim’s first on-screen return to the Little House on the Prairie universe, this time portraying a completely new character while paying tribute to the franchise that launched her television career.
