UNIPA News(Paris)-More than 1,200 people were arrested and 150 police officers injured during nationwide protests across France on Saturday, October 17, as demonstrations over rising living costs, deteriorating public services and economic hardship escalated into violent clashes, arson and looting.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez estimated that approximately 550,000 people participated in demonstrations nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris. Organisers reported a higher turnout.

The unrest intensified in Paris during the evening, with protesters setting vehicles alight, torching buildings and clashing with riot police near prominent locations, including Place de la République. Police deployed tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds. Shops and businesses were looted or vandalised, and at least one restaurant was gutted by fire.

Violence was also reported in several other cities. In Bordeaux, protesters looted a Louis Vuitton store, while an Apple store in Lille was ransacked. Government buildings in Lille and Marseille were reportedly broken into.

In Lyon, a fire damaged the city’s tourist office, prompting Mayor Gregory Doucet to describe the incident as a tragedy because of the building’s historical significance. In Limoges, a fire at the town hall caused part of its roof to collapse, according to local authorities. Damage was also reported in Grenoble, Avignon, Pau, Montpellier and Valence.

The unrest has its origins in student demonstrations over deteriorating conditions in France’s secondary schools, known as lycées, which serve students aged 15 to 18. Students have protested against staff shortages and inadequate facilities, accusing the government of failing to address their concerns.

The movement has since expanded to include trade unions and other groups angered by rising living costs and declining public services. Members of the Yellow Vest movement, which emerged in 2018 in response to fuel-price increases and economic pressures, have also joined the demonstrations.

The government has announced measures to address some of the concerns. Education Minister Édouard Geffray promised 3,000 additional supply teachers during a television interview on October 8. However, the demonstrations have continued to grow in scale and intensity.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the arson, looting and attacks on public buildings, pledging that those responsible would face legal consequences. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said police had confronted violence of extreme intensity and warned that some groups were attempting to use the unrest to advance political objectives ahead of the presidential election scheduled for April 2027.

The police response has also come under scrutiny. The police watchdog is investigating at least two dozen allegations of police violence. Among the injured were protesters who reportedly suffered serious injuries involving police grenades.

The National Union of Autonomous Police Unions (UNSA) warned that officers were facing mounting pressure amid repeated attacks during the demonstrations. The Paris Police Prefecture defended its officers’ response, saying they would continue to confront violent rioters.

The protests have further exposed political divisions ahead of the presidential election. Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, accused the far left of exploiting protesters’ legitimate grievances and blamed Jean-Luc Mélenchon for contributing to the violence.

Mélenchon, leader of the left-wing La France Insoumise party, who participated in demonstrations, accused police of using excessive force while also condemning looting and arson. Lecornu criticised his remarks as dangerous and cynical.

The nationwide unrest reflects growing tensions over household expenses, public services, education and the government’s ability to respond to social demands as France approaches a consequential election year.
