Washington, March 4 — UNIPA News
United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed Wednesday that a US submarine carried out the sinking of an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Sri Lanka.
In a statement posted on X, Hegseth described the operation, saying a US submarine targeted and destroyed the Iranian vessel in international waters. “They believed they were safe, but a torpedo sent them to the bottom,” he stated, referring to the strike as “Quiet Death.”
The defense chief underscored the historic nature of the incident, noting that it is the first time since World War II that a US submarine has sunk an enemy ship using a torpedo. He added that the United States remains committed to pursuing what he described as decisive victory in ongoing military engagements.
Earlier, authorities in Colombo reported the sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena. Official sources indicated that approximately 140 personnel are either confirmed dead or remain missing following the vessel’s disappearance.
The Sri Lanka Navy has deployed two naval ships along with aerial support to the site to conduct search-and-rescue operations in an effort to locate any possible survivors.
The development marks a significant escalation in regional tensions, signaling a shift from primarily aerial confrontations to direct submarine warfare in critical international maritime routes.
