Antigua and Barbuda
The government of Antigua and Barbuda has officially nominated H.E. María Fernanda Espinosa as its candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. The announcement marks a significant step in the ongoing discussions surrounding leadership succession at the world body.
María Fernanda Espinosa, a respected diplomat from Ecuador, previously served as President of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly from 2018 to 2019. Throughout her diplomatic career, she has been recognized for her advocacy on multilateral cooperation, sustainable development, climate action, gender equality, and peacebuilding initiatives.
By endorsing Espinosa, Antigua and Barbuda positions itself prominently in global diplomatic affairs while supporting the possibility of greater representation from Latin America and the Caribbean in international leadership. Political observers note that her nomination could strengthen calls for regional balance and increased female representation in one of the most influential positions in international governance.
The selection of the next UN Secretary-General is expected to attract worldwide attention, as member states debate key priorities including global security, climate challenges, humanitarian crises, economic inequality, and reforms within the United Nations system. The final decision will ultimately be made through a recommendation by the UN Security Council followed by appointment by the General Assembly.
Antigua and Barbuda’s support for María Fernanda Espinosa reflects the nation’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and its growing voice in international decision-making processes. Her candidacy is expected to generate discussions among member states in the months ahead as the leadership race intensifies.
