UNIPA NEWS – International Affairs :

Cuba has officially closed its embassy in Quito, following a serious diplomatic dispute with the government of Ecuador. The move came after Ecuador declared all Cuban diplomatic, consular, and administrative personnel persona non grata, ordering them to leave the country.

In response, the government of Cuba announced that it would cease operations at its embassy in Quito and discontinue the use of the building that served as the headquarters of its diplomatic mission. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, all diplomatic symbols and official identifiers of the Cuban mission were removed immediately.

Cuban authorities confirmed that, due to the expulsion of their diplomatic staff and the resulting inability to maintain a diplomatic presence, the embassy officially ceased functioning as a diplomatic mission at 10:00 a.m. (Quito time) on March 6, 2026.

The Cuban government expressed deep regret over what it described as a “unilateral and hostile decision” by Ecuador. Officials in Havana stated that the move undermines the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that has historically characterized relations between the two nations.

The Cuban embassy formally notified Ecuadorian authorities of its decision on March 5, 2026, one day before the official closure took effect.
