Fire Destroys Marine Science Laboratory at University of South Florida St. Petersburg Campus
A major fire has destroyed the Marine Science Laboratory at the University of South Florida campus in St. Petersburg, according to university officials. The building, considered a critical center for marine research and scientific studies, suffered catastrophic damage and may be declared a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.
University authorities quickly initiated an emergency evacuation after the fire broke out. Multiple firefighting units responded to the scene, working for several hours to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.
Officials confirmed that no injuries or entrapments were reported during the incident. Authorities also stated that no hazardous materials were released into the surrounding environment, easing concerns about possible contamination.
The fire caused severe structural damage, including the collapse and destruction of the laboratory’s roof. As a result, classes, exams, and academic activities associated with the College of Marine Science will be temporarily relocated while damage assessments continue.
