Mohammad Sharifuzzaman (Special Correspondent): European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller met with Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir.
The meeting was held at the Commerce Minister’s office at the Secretariat today, Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The meeting discussed in detail the bilateral trade relations between Bangladesh and the European Union, investment prospects and the removal of existing non-tariff barriers. Both sides emphasized on making the trade environment easier, more transparent and business-friendly.
The Commerce Minister said that the European Union is one of the most important trading partners of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is interested in further expanding trade relations with the EU. He said that the government is working on policy and institutional reforms to increase exports, attract investment and facilitate business activities. In particular, the government is serious about reducing non-tariff barriers, simplifying the import-export process and effectively solving the real problems of businessmen. The import policy order has already been published on the website for comments.
Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said that the government is working to increase the confidence of traders and increase their competitiveness in international trade. He expressed hope that a realistic solution to the existing problems will be possible through constructive discussions and joint initiatives with the European Union.
European Union Ambassador Michael Miller expressed his interest in further strengthening the EU’s trade cooperation with Bangladesh. He said that the positive initiatives of the Bangladesh government in improving the business environment and removing existing barriers are commendable. However, even if it takes time to resolve some complex issues, it is necessary to work in depth on sustainable solutions. In this regard, the European Union and the concerned traders are ready to cooperate with their experience and opinions.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Ayesha Akhtar and senior officials of the ministry were present at the meeting.
