UNIPA NEWS(London) 20 June-Veteran television director James “Jimmy” Burrows, whose career helped shape modern television comedy, has died at the age of 85. According to a statement from his family, Burrows passed away peacefully on June 19, surrounded by his loved ones.
Following the news of his death, several cast members from the hit sitcom Friends paid tribute to the acclaimed director, who played a significant role in the show’s success.
Matt LeBlanc described Burrows as “a true icon” and praised his lasting influence on both the entertainment industry and those who worked alongside him. David Schwimmer said Burrows consistently brought out the best in actors and elevated every production he directed. He also highlighted the director’s warmth, humility and generosity, describing him as a mentor and friend whose impact would be remembered by generations of television professionals.
Lisa Kudrow also honored Burrows by sharing a photograph from their time working together, reflecting on their professional relationship.
Tributes were also paid by stars of Will & Grace. Debra Messing remembered Burrows as a groundbreaking television figure who brought laughter to audiences around the world. She said cast members viewed him as a father figure and credited him with fostering a creative environment that encouraged actors to experiment and grow.
Known throughout the television industry as “Jimmy,” Burrows built a career spanning more than five decades. He directed more than 1,000 television episodes and earned widespread recognition as one of the most influential figures in comedy television.
His directing credits included Friends, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Will & Grace, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly and The Big Bang Theory.
Burrows won 11 Emmy Awards during his career and was widely credited with helping define the modern sitcom format. In a statement, his family described him as a legendary director, mentor and creative force whose work brought joy to audiences worldwide.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie Burrows, four daughters and seven grandchildren.
