DUBAI (UNIPA News) — Iran and the United States have intensified their show of military strength as nuclear negotiations remain uncertain. On Thursday, Iran conducted joint military drills with Russia, while the United States moved another aircraft carrier closer to the Middle East.
Iran’s military exercise, along with the arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford near the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, highlights rising tensions between the two countries. Earlier this week, Iran also carried out live-fire drills in the Strait of Hormuz — a strategic waterway through which about one-fifth of the world’s traded oil passes.
The deployment of additional U.S. warships and aircraft does not necessarily mean that Washington plans to strike Iran. However, it gives President Donald Trump the option of taking military action if he decides to do so. Although Trump previously set “red lines” over Iran’s crackdown on peaceful protesters and mass executions, he has so far avoided direct military action and has re-engaged Tehran in nuclear talks that were disrupted by the Iran-Israel conflict in June.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that if Iran refuses to reach a deal, the United States might need to use military bases in Diego Garcia and Fairford in the United Kingdom to counter any potential threat from what he described as an unstable regime. His comments also appeared aimed at pressuring the UK regarding its plans to determine the future of the Chagos Islands in discussions with Mauritius.
Meanwhile, unrest continues inside Iran. Families and supporters have been holding memorial gatherings 40 days after the deaths of protesters killed during the government crackdown. Some of these ceremonies have included anti-government chants, despite warnings from authorities.
During Thursday’s joint drill, Iranian and Russian naval forces carried out operations in the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. According to Iran’s state news agency, the exercise aimed to improve operational coordination and exchange military experience. China had participated in similar “Security Belt” drills in previous years, but there was no confirmation of its involvement this time.
Iran also issued rocket-fire warnings to aircraft in the region, indicating that anti-ship missiles might be launched during the exercise.
Tracking data showed the USS Gerald R. Ford off Morocco’s Atlantic coast on Wednesday, meaning it could pass through the Strait of Gibraltar and move into the eastern Mediterranean. If positioned there, the carrier strike group would strengthen U.S. air and missile defense capabilities, potentially helping protect Israel and Jordan in case of conflict.
The United States deployed similar naval forces to the region during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza to deter possible Iranian attacks.
