Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé met on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, with Gilles Michaud, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations in charge of security. The meeting took place against the backdrop of a worsening security crisis marked by the growing power of armed groups across the country.
Discussions focused on the surge in gang activities and the urgent need for coordinated responses to address the rapidly deteriorating national security situation.
Armed Groups Expand Attacks Across Regions
Meanwhile, violence continues to spread on the ground. In Séguin, located in the Southeast department, brutal attacks have left more than ten people dead. The local police station was set on fire, and several vehicles belonging to the Haitian National Police (PNH) were destroyed.
These incidents highlight the increasing ability of armed groups to target state infrastructure and spread fear in areas that were previously less affected.
A Week Marked by Mourning
This week has been deeply marked by tragedy across the country. In Cap-Haïtien, the area surrounding the Citadelle Laferrière is mourning following distressing events that have shaken the local population.
In Gonaïves, an entrepreneur was shot and killed by armed men, underscoring the widespread nature of insecurity affecting all sectors of society, including the business community.
An Alarming Situation
As violence continues to escalate, the Haitian population remains gripped by fear. National authorities, alongside international partners, are seeking solutions to restore order and security.
The meeting between the Haitian government and United Nations officials may pave the way for new strategies, but on the ground, the urgency remains critical.
