UNIPA News(Tehran) 27 May 2026:Tensions in the Middle East have intensified once again after Iran accused the United States of violating a fragile ceasefire by launching strikes near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the future of ongoing negotiations aimed at ending nearly seven weeks of conflict in the region.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry claimed that US forces targeted areas in the southern Hormozgan province, where local media reported explosions during the early hours of Tuesday. Tehran described the attacks as a serious breach of the temporary ceasefire agreement.

In response, the United States said the strikes were conducted as “defensive operations,” targeting missile launch sites and vessels allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines near the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest escalation comes at a sensitive moment, as diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran were reportedly making progress toward an initial agreement designed to halt hostilities and restore safe shipping routes through the Strait. According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a broader settlement could still take several days to finalize.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, carrying a significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Since the conflict began in late February, maritime traffic through the region has dropped sharply, triggering instability in global energy markets.

Following reports of the renewed strikes, international oil prices climbed once again, with Brent crude rising significantly amid fears of prolonged disruption in the Gulf region. Analysts warn that continued instability could further impact fuel, food, and transportation costs worldwide.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated that they reserve the right to respond to the attacks. Iranian officials also claimed that air defense systems had intercepted foreign drones operating near the Gulf region.

Meanwhile, negotiations between the two countries remain focused on a temporary framework that could reduce military tensions, reopen commercial shipping routes, and potentially ease economic pressure on Iran through the release of frozen financial assets. However, major disagreements over Iran’s nuclear activities and broader regional security issues continue to complicate the talks.

The conflict, which has already caused thousands of casualties across the region, continues to fuel humanitarian and economic concerns. International observers fear that any further military escalation near the Strait of Hormuz could have serious consequences for global trade, regional stability, and energy security.

As diplomatic efforts continue behind closed doors, the world watches closely to see whether the fragile ceasefire can survive the latest wave of accusations and military activity.
