UNIPA News Desk|| 29 June-The conflict in Iran is driving up global jet fuel prices and intensifying supply challenges for African airlines, prompting carriers to review flight routes and operations amid growing concerns over the sector’s financial stability.

The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) said the crisis has highlighted the continent’s heavy reliance on imported refined jet fuel, leaving airlines highly exposed to disruptions in global energy markets.

According to AFRAA, African carriers were already paying approximately 17% more for jet fuel than the global average before the conflict. Rising fuel prices are now placing additional pressure on airline finances, with fuel accounting for between 30% and 40% of operating costs.

AFRAA Secretary-General Abderahmane Berthe said many airlines are unable to fully pass higher fuel costs on to passengers without affecting demand, forcing carriers to absorb a significant share of the increased expenses.

The situation has also raised concerns over jet fuel availability at major aviation hubs, including Nairobi and Addis Ababa, where stable fuel supplies are essential for regional and international flight operations. In response, some airlines have begun reducing flight frequencies and reassessing route networks to manage rising costs and supply uncertainty.

The crisis has renewed calls for greater investment in Africa’s domestic refining capacity to reduce dependence on imported aviation fuel. Industry attention is increasingly focused on Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery, which is expected to expand the regional supply of refined petroleum products and help strengthen fuel supply chains across the continent.

Despite the challenges, AFRAA forecasts annual passenger traffic growth of around 6% in Africa. However, the association warned that prolonged disruptions in fuel supply and sustained price increases could significantly affect airline profitability and regional connectivity.
