TEHRAN, IRAN — July 9, 2026 — Iran concluded several days of national mourning with the state funeral and burial of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Funeral ceremonies were held in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, drawing large crowds of mourners, senior officials, religious leaders, and international delegations.
The final burial ceremony took place at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of the holiest sites in Shiite Islam. Throughout the week, thousands of Iranians gathered along the procession routes to pay their respects, while security remained at a high level.
State officials described the ceremonies as a tribute to Khamenei’s decades of leadership and his role in shaping the Islamic Republic of Iran. Religious prayers and memorial services were conducted across the country as part of the official mourning period.
