UNIPA News|| Bagdad|| 29 June-The Iraqi Olympic Committee has announced an investigation into the national football team’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, with officials set to review the causes of the poor performance and develop a long-term strategy to improve future results.
Committee President Aqeel Muftin said a meeting will be held with officials from the Iraqi Football Association to assess the team’s World Cup performance and formulate plans to prevent a similar outcome in future international tournaments.
Iraq returned to the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time in 40 years but failed to progress beyond the group stage after losing all three matches against France, Norway and Senegal. The team finished the tournament without a point and conceded 12 goals.
Muftin said discussions following the squad’s return would focus on identifying weaknesses and establishing a comprehensive roadmap covering short-, medium- and long-term development.
He added that specialised committees would examine the standard of the domestic league and national teams, with recommendations aimed at strengthening Iraq’s football structure and improving competitiveness at the international level.
Muftin stressed that responsibility for rebuilding the national team extends beyond sporting institutions, saying the team represents the entire nation and requires collective support to achieve sustained success.
