JD Vance Delays Geneva Trip as US-Iran Peace Talks Face Fresh Uncertainty

UNIPA News(Dubai) 19 June-US Vice President JD Vance has postponed a planned visit to Switzerland for talks with Iranian negotiators, adding fresh uncertainty to efforts aimed at implementing the recently signed US-Iran peace agreement.

A White House spokesperson said on June 19 that Vance and the US delegation were prepared to travel to Geneva once arrangements for the negotiations were finalized. However, the spokesperson acknowledged that the logistics of the talks remained complex and unpredictable.

The development follows conflicting signals from Tehran regarding the next phase of negotiations. While Iranian officials had previously indicated readiness to begin technical discussions under the agreement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry questioned the need for a formal signing ceremony in Geneva after both countries’ presidents had already signed the accord on June 18.

Iranian media reported that Tehran expects tangible evidence of US implementation of the interim agreement before committing to further negotiations. The semi-official Tasnim news agency stated that there was no confirmed plan for Iranian negotiators to travel to Geneva.

The agreement, which extended a fragile ceasefire by at least 60 days, is intended to lay the groundwork for broader negotiations, including discussions over Iran’s nuclear program. The accord also includes sanctions relief, the unfreezing of Iranian assets worth tens of billions of dollars, and waivers allowing Iran to resume oil exports.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei criticized the agreement’s circumstances, describing it as a result of US pressure failing to achieve its objectives. He warned that Tehran would reject any excessive demands during upcoming nuclear negotiations.

Under the deal, both sides have 60 days to reach a framework on Iran’s nuclear activities, unless an extension is mutually agreed. Iran has reiterated that it does not seek nuclear weapons and has agreed to inspections and the down-blending of highly enriched uranium within the country.

The diplomatic uncertainty comes as fighting continues elsewhere in the region. Israel, which was not a party to the US-Iran agreement, has maintained military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Fresh Israeli airstrikes were reported on June 19, raising questions about the durability of the broader ceasefire effort.

Political debate has also emerged in Washington, where some Republican lawmakers have questioned whether the Trump administration made significant concessions in exchange for ending the conflict. Critics argue that Iran emerged from the war with economic benefits and retained key strategic leverage, including influence over the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump has said he expects a complete ceasefire across the region, while the agreement calls for the permanent end of the conflict in Lebanon and respect for the country’s sovereignty. However, Israel has indicated it does not intend to withdraw from areas it currently occupies in southern Lebanon.
