King Charles III Reaffirms UK–US Alliance in Historic Address to Congress Amid Global Tensions

UNIPA News Desk: King Charles III delivered a rare and symbolic address to the United States Congress on Tuesday, emphasizing the enduring strength of the UK–US alliance despite growing geopolitical tensions in Europe and the Middle East.

Speaking before a joint session of lawmakers alongside Queen Camilla, the British monarch underscored unity between the two nations, even as divisions persist over the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The king received a prolonged standing ovation upon entering the chamber.

“Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy,” Charles stated, highlighting shared responsibilities in protecting citizens and honoring those serving their countries.

Although Buckingham Palace had indicated the speech would avoid political themes, the king referenced key global issues. These included the importance of NATO, continued support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, and the broader risks of isolationism—remarks widely interpreted as subtle responses to positions taken by Donald Trump.

Trump has recently criticized NATO allies and expressed hesitation over sustained US support for Ukraine, as well as frustration over limited European involvement in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Charles invoked historical cooperation between the UK and US, referencing joint efforts during September 11 attacks, the World Wars, and Afghanistan. He stressed that similar unity is now required in defending Ukraine.

“The same unyielding resolve is needed for the defense of Ukraine and her most courageous people,” he said.

Later, during a state banquet at the White House, Trump claimed the king agreed with his stance that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. Charles, however, did not publicly comment on Iran, maintaining the constitutional neutrality expected of a British monarch. Both Buckingham Palace and Downing Street declined immediate responses.

In what appeared to be a veiled critique of “America First” policies, Charles urged continued international cooperation: “I pray… that we ignore the clarion calls to become ever more inward-looking.”

This marked only the second time a British sovereign has addressed the US Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.

During his visit, Charles also met leading US technology executives, including Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, Jensen Huang, Lisa Su, Marc Benioff, and Ruth Porat. Discussions focused on challenges faced by startups, as the UK promotes itself as a global technology hub.

The visit comes amid strained relations between Washington and London, with Trump repeatedly criticizing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer over what he describes as insufficient support in the Iran conflict.

Charles also highlighted environmental protection, a long-standing personal cause, calling nature “our most precious and irreplaceable asset.” The remark drew a more subdued response from some Republican lawmakers.

Meanwhile, a social media post by the White House showing Trump and Charles captioned “TWO KINGS” sparked attention, amid ongoing political sensitivities in the US regarding presidential authority.

Despite tensions, Trump praised the meeting, calling Charles “a fantastic person” and emphasizing the historic friendship between the two nations dating back to their post-independence reconciliation.

In the background, an internal Pentagon communication suggested the US may reconsider support for the UK’s claim to the Falkland Islands, adding another layer of diplomatic complexity.

Charles notably avoided addressing the Jeffrey Epstein scandal during the visit. His brother, Prince Andrew, remains under scrutiny for alleged connections to Epstein, though he has denied wrongdoing.

US Representative Ro Khanna stated that the king declined an invitation to meet Epstein survivors during the trip, citing concerns about ongoing legal proceedings.

Charles’ four-day state visit continues against a backdrop of global uncertainty, as both nations navigate complex diplomatic and military challenges while reaffirming their historic alliance.
