Film Hamnet is an English History drama film adapted from a novel of the same title in 2020. The author of the novel Hamnet is Maggie O’ Farrel.
Film Hamnet tells The intimate love story of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway. Their meeting took place in a forest. William Shakespeare was 15 years old and Agnes Hathaway was 26 years old.
Agnes Hathaway is someone who loves nature and is able to read the future. She has inner and spiritual sensitivity.
The role of Agnes Hathaway played by Jessie Buckley and William Shakespeare played by Paul Mescal. From their intimate love relationship was born Susanna Hall Shakespeare played by Body Rae Breathnach.
Even though both of their families did not agree with their relationship. They still live their small family. Suddenly Agnes Hathaway had the prediction that she had two children. But in fact she gave birth to twins in her second pregnancy. The children are named Hamnet Shakespeare played by Jacobi Jupe. And his young sister is Judith Quiney Shakespeare played by Olivia Lynes.
Their joy at having a complete family turned to tragedy when their 11-year-old son, Hamnet Shakespeare, died of the plague.
This changes their mentality. They experience heartbreak and loss. They must strive to survive and protect their surviving children.
William Shakespeare became short-tempered and did not want to do anything useless. Agnes Hathaway, his wife, allowed her husband William Shakespeare to move from Stratford to England to become a writer and playwright.
This tragedy 16th century family story became an inspiration for the world of cinema. It is truly romantic, intimate, spiritual and tragedy. Film Hamnet won an award at the 52nd Telluride Film Festival. Released by Universal Pictures on December 5, 2025 in theaters worldwide.
The film Hamnet was shown in the UK on January 6, 2026. Showing in Theaters in Indonesia on February 27, 2026. Jessie Buckley won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
