UNIPA News(Paris) 28 May 2026: Norway has taken a historic step in reshaping its national defense strategy by formally joining France’s expanding nuclear protection framework. The move signals a major shift in Oslo’s long-standing security doctrine, which traditionally relied heavily on close strategic ties with the United States and NATO leadership.

The agreement was finalized in Paris on Tuesday, where Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and French President Emmanuel Macron signed a new bilateral defense cooperation pact. Under the arrangement, Norway will participate in a French-led nuclear deterrence initiative designed to strengthen Europe’s collective security posture.

Through this partnership, Norway is expected to come under France’s extended nuclear protection system, meaning Paris could provide nuclear-backed defensive support if Norway faces a serious external threat.

Prime Minister Støre stated that the decision was driven by the increasingly unstable security environment across Europe. He pointed to Russia’s rapid military expansion, modernization of its nuclear arsenal, and the continuing war in Ukraine as key factors influencing Norway’s strategic calculations.

At the same time, the Norwegian leader emphasized that the agreement does not involve the deployment of nuclear weapons on Norwegian territory during peacetime, seeking to ease concerns about regional escalation.

Norway, a NATO member with a population of approximately 5.6 million people, shares a strategically sensitive Arctic border with Russia. Although closely connected to Europe, the country remains outside the European Union.

France first introduced plans earlier this year to broaden the reach of its independent nuclear deterrence system to allied European nations seeking additional security guarantees amid uncertainty over future American military commitments to Europe.

With this latest agreement, Norway becomes the third country to align itself with France’s nuclear umbrella after Poland and Lithuania, both of which are located near Russian territory.

According to recent figures released by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), Russia and the United States continue to possess the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, each holding more than 5,000 nuclear warheads. China follows with roughly 500 warheads, while France and the United Kingdom maintain smaller but significant nuclear stockpiles.
