UNIPA NEWS INT’L DESK: 18 APRIL,2026.
Hopes for a lasting calm in Middle Eastern geopolitics have once again dimmed, as Iran announced a renewed move to take control of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has accused the United States of effectively imposing a naval blockade on its ports, disregarding international law.

In response, Iran signaled that it may assert full control over the strait, raising serious concerns about disruptions to global energy supply chains. Analysts warn that such a move could trigger significant instability in the international oil market.

Recent rounds of talks between Washington and Tehran, along with optimistic remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, had suggested a possible easing of tensions. However, developments on the ground indicate otherwise. Iran’s military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, stated that U.S. actions in the region amount to “economic terrorism” by obstructing Iranian commercial shipping routes.

According to Iranian officials, U.S. Central Command has been interfering with vessels heading to Iranian ports and redirecting oil tankers departing from the country. Tehran has made it clear that if its ports remain under pressure, it sees no obligation to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

Meanwhile, the U.S. administration has reiterated that sanctions and strict monitoring of Iranian activities will continue until a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is reached. This stance has further heightened tensions between the two sides.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. Nearly one-fifth of global oil supply passes through this narrow waterway, making it essential for energy exports from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, and Qatar.

Following Iran’s announcement, global oil prices have already shown signs of volatility. Economic experts warn that if restrictions persist, crude oil prices could surge to between $150 and $200 per barrel.

Countries in Europe and Asia, particularly major importers like China and India, are closely monitoring the situation. Many are pushing for diplomatic solutions, though prospects remain uncertain due to the clash between Washington’s “maximum pressure” policy and Tehran’s resistance strategy.

On the military front, U.S. Central Command has increased its presence in and around the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has reportedly strengthened its coastal defense systems. The situation remains highly sensitive, with risks ranging from limited naval skirmishes to broader regional escalation.

Diplomatic efforts, possibly mediated by countries like Pakistan or Oman, are being discussed as a way forward. However, failure to reach an agreement could lead to a prolonged global energy crisis, placing immense pressure on economies worldwide.

The international community is now closely watching the upcoming round of talks. Without meaningful progress, 2026 could emerge as a defining year marked by severe energy disruptions and heightened geopolitical instability.
