UNIPA News||Moscow, May 8: Russia has announced a temporary 48-hour ceasefire in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine to commemorate the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defence.

The ceasefire is scheduled to take effect on May 8 and May 9, coinciding with Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations, one of the country’s most significant national events. The occasion marks the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 and is traditionally observed with large-scale military parades and commemorative ceremonies, particularly in Moscow’s Red Square.

According to reports, the Russian government described the pause in hostilities as part of its traditional observance of the historic anniversary. Every year, Victory Day serves as a symbol of national pride and military remembrance in Russia, often featuring high-profile military displays attended by senior government officials and foreign dignitaries.

However, Ukraine has not yet issued any formal acceptance or official response to the proposed temporary ceasefire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking through social media, stated that Kyiv had not received any formal or direct communication regarding the ceasefire proposal from Moscow.

He further emphasized that human life should hold greater value than symbolic celebrations or military ceremonies, adding that if Russia is genuinely committed to peace, it must demonstrate this through concrete and meaningful actions rather than short-term declarations.

The announcement comes amid continued international calls for a broader and more sustainable ceasefire, as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to cause humanitarian suffering and regional instability.

Political analysts suggest that while the temporary truce may reduce immediate tensions, its broader significance will depend on whether it leads to further diplomatic engagement or confidence-building measures between the two sides.
