UNIPA News(Moscow): Russia has warned of a forceful response following what it described as a Ukrainian drone attack on the turbine hall of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility.
Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Dmitry Medvedev said the targeting of infrastructure at a nuclear power plant represents an extremely dangerous escalation, warning that any significant damage to such facilities could have consequences extending beyond the battlefield and pose risks to nuclear and radiation safety.
According to Russian authorities, the attack involved a Ukrainian drone striking the turbine hall of the Zaporizhzhia plant. Moscow has not publicly provided detailed information on the extent of the damage.
Medvedev accused Kyiv of pursuing an escalatory approach and said Russia would take all necessary measures to protect its strategic infrastructure and personnel. He stated that any attempts to harm nuclear facilities would be met with a response proportional to the threat.
Ukrainian authorities had not immediately commented on the Russian allegations.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has remained one of the most sensitive flashpoints in the Russia-Ukraine conflict since the start of the war. The facility has repeatedly been at the center of international concern over the potential risks posed by military activity near nuclear infrastructure.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has consistently called on all parties to avoid military operations around nuclear sites, warning that direct or indirect attacks on such facilities could endanger nuclear security and have broader regional and international consequences.
The reported incident comes amid intensified hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides increasingly relying on drones and long-range weapons in attacks targeting military positions, energy infrastructure, and other strategic facilities.
