The security and political situation in Haiti has entered a critical phase in February 2026. Armed violence, increased U.S. military movements in Caribbean waters, and significant changes within the transitional government have placed the country at the center of regional and international attention.
Armed Groups in Haiti: More Than 12,000 Members
According to official statements by the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Haiti, Henry T. Wooster, armed gangs operating across the country are estimated to have more than 12,000 members. This assessment is based on security data and field intelligence gathered over recent months.
Several neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince and provincial cities remain under the influence of heavily armed groups. These groups control key roadways, impose illegal taxation, and are responsible for kidnappings, armed clashes, and widespread instability. The situation continues to weaken state institutions and deepen the humanitarian crisis.
U.S. Military Vessels and Aircraft Near Haitian Waters
Recent reports indicate the presence of U.S. military ships and surveillance aircraft operating in the Caribbean Sea include Haiti. The country’s geographic position gives it strategic importance, particularly given its proximity to Cuba.
Regional analysts interpret this military presence as a preventive security measure aimed at containing regional destabilization. It also unfolds at a time of ongoing diplomatic and economic tensions between United States and Cuba.
While no direct intervention has been officially announced, the deployment underscores the strategic importance of the Caribbean basin in Washington’s security calculations.
February 7, 2026: Political Transition and Concentration of Executive Power
February 7, 2026 marked a significant turning point in Haiti’s transitional governance. Following the replacement of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), the Prime Minister assumed expanded executive authority.
This shift has sparked debate regarding institutional balance, constitutional order, and the government’s capacity to respond effectively to the escalating security crisis. Civil society organizations are calling for transparency, a clear electoral timetable, and concrete measures to restore public security.
Regional Flash: The Caribbean on Alert
🇯🇲 Jamaica
Jamaica continues strengthening regional security cooperation to combat arms trafficking and transnational crime across Caribbean maritime routes. Authorities remain vigilant about potential spillover effects from Haiti’s instability.
🇧🇸 Bahamas
The Bahamas has intensified maritime surveillance to address irregular migration flows and criminal networks operating in regional waters.
🇧🇲 Bermuda
Though geographically distant from Haiti’s crisis, Bermuda closely monitors geopolitical developments due to its role as an international financial center.
🇬🇾 Guyana
Guyana continues to expand its oil production sector, positioning itself as a rising energy power in the Caribbean and South American region, drawing increased strategic interest from global actors.
Call for Peace and Human Rights
Amid growing insecurity and geopolitical tensions, human rights advocates stress that sustainable stability in Haiti and the wider Caribbean cannot rely solely on military measures. Long-term peace will require institutional reform, social justice, economic opportunity, and respect for fundamental human rights.
