UNIPA News(London) 22 June-US President Donald Trump has intensified speculation over the political future of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer by claiming that the Labour leader would resign on Monday, despite no official indication that he plans to step down.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that Starmer would resign as prime minister, criticising his record on immigration and energy policy.
Starmer’s office said on Sunday that his position remained unchanged from Friday, when he stated that he would not “walk away” from Downing Street and would contest any formal leadership challenge.
The British prime minister is facing growing pressure from within the ruling Labour Party following poor local election results in May and declining approval ratings.
Calls for Starmer to outline a timetable for his departure intensified after Andy Burnham secured a decisive by-election victory in Makerfield on Friday, strengthening his position as a potential contender for the Labour leadership.
According to reports, several Labour ministers and dozens of MPs have privately urged Starmer to consider an orderly transition to avoid a divisive leadership contest.
A source familiar with the discussions said Starmer spent the weekend reflecting on his position with his family and was expected to hold talks with Burnham.
Reports also suggested that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper had privately encouraged Starmer to step aside, although her office did not immediately comment on the claims.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledged the political challenges facing the prime minister, saying Starmer was considering what the country expected from him amid difficult circumstances.
Kyle said there was nothing inevitable about the coming days and stressed that the Labour Party would ensure a functional process regardless of any future developments.
Former minister Jess Phillips said it appeared the party had reached a critical moment and argued that any potential departure should be handled with dignity.
Starmer has maintained that his Labour government’s landslide victory in the 2024 general election gives him a mandate to remain in office until the next scheduled election in 2029.
No formal leadership contest has been announced, and there has been no confirmation that Starmer intends to resign.
