UNIPA News(London) 31 May-A leading figure in the UK Sikh Federation has claimed the Sikh community has faced increased hostility and hate crime following the conviction of a Sikh man for the murder of a university student using a religious blade.

Vickrum Digwa was found guilty of murdering Southampton University student Henry Nowak after fatally stabbing him with a blade associated with Sikh religious practice. The case has sparked public debate over the legal right of practising Sikhs to carry a Kirpan, a ceremonial blade regarded as a sacred article of faith.

Dabinderjit Singh of the UK Sikh Federation said the community had found the attention surrounding the case “quite difficult,” arguing that the actions of one individual should not be used to judge an entire religious group.

According to Singh, there has been a noticeable rise in anti-Sikh sentiment since the trial, with members of the community questioning why their faith has come under increased scrutiny. He maintained that the case was about an individual’s criminal actions rather than Sikhism itself.

Following the verdict, the UK Sikh Federation wrote to the Home Office calling for anti-Sikh hate crimes to be recorded separately, similar to existing monitoring systems for anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish incidents.

Under UK law, practising Sikhs are permitted to carry a Kirpan in public for religious reasons. The exemption is provided under Section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, which allows individuals to possess a bladed article for genuine religious purposes. However, any blade used in an act of violence is legally classified as an offensive weapon.

The Sikh Federation stressed that the blade used by Digwa was not representative of the Kirpans normally carried by practising Sikhs. The organisation stated that once a Kirpan is used offensively, it ceases to be a religious symbol and becomes an offensive weapon under the law.

The case has also attracted political attention. Reform UK politician Robert Jenrick has called for a ban on carrying Kirpans in public, while businessman Elon Musk publicly criticised aspects of the police response to the incident.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary later apologised to Henry Nowak’s family after officers initially handcuffed and arrested the injured student at the scene before the circumstances became clear.

Singh said public commentary from politicians and high-profile figures had intensified scrutiny of the Sikh community and made it more difficult to explain the religious significance of the Kirpan.

Vickrum Digwa is scheduled to be sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on Monday.
