UNIPA News,09 July(ANKARA)— Ukraine is seeking to expand its long-term defense partnership with the United States following high-level talks between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, with air defense, Patriot missile capabilities and drone cooperation emerging as key priorities.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, said Wednesday’s meeting delivered “several important strategic signals” on strengthening bilateral defense cooperation, including progress on Patriot missile capabilities, drone technology and joint defense production.

She said the willingness to cooperate on Patriot systems and advance a drone partnership reflects a shared understanding that closer security cooperation serves the strategic interests of both countries.

According to Stefanishyna, expanded joint production and licensing agreements could accelerate the delivery of urgently needed defense equipment to Ukraine while supporting the United States in maintaining its leadership in advanced defense technologies. She added that increased industrial cooperation would also help free US defense production capacity to modernize its own forces while meeting international demand.

Ukraine has consistently urged Washington to provide additional Patriot air defense systems and interceptor missiles, which Kyiv considers essential for protecting cities and critical infrastructure from Russian ballistic missile attacks. Ukrainian officials have also advocated for broader licensing arrangements that would enable domestic production of Western-designed defense systems.

Stefanishyna said Ukraine has demonstrated its ability to serve as a reliable industrial and technological partner, citing the country’s experienced engineers, expanding defense industry and rapid innovation in military technologies.

She also emphasized that Ukraine’s battlefield experience and advances in unmanned aerial systems could contribute to broader collective security beyond the country’s own defense needs.

The ambassador’s remarks followed comments by President Trump in Ankara indicating that the United States would allow Ukraine to produce Patriot air defense capabilities under license, a move that could significantly strengthen Ukraine’s long-term air defense capacity. Trump also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Ukraine on drone technologies, reflecting Kyiv’s growing role in the development of combat-tested unmanned systems.

Stefanishyna said diplomatic efforts must be supported by immediate military assistance, stressing that Ukraine urgently requires additional anti-ballistic missile capabilities to protect civilians and critical infrastructure as the conflict continues.
