UN LEADERSHIP :
The United Nations (UN) has officially launched the selection process for its next Secretary-General, who is expected to take office on January 1, 2027.
The current mandate of António Guterres will end on December 31, 2026, paving the way for new leadership at the head of the UN Secretariat.
As part of the process, declared candidates are participating in public interactive dialogues held at UN headquarters. These sessions allow Member States and civil society representatives to assess the candidates’ visions, priorities, and leadership capacity.
The next Secretary-General will face major global challenges and will be tasked with advancing the UN’s three core pillars: International peace and security
Human rights Sustainable development
This selection process reflects a growing commitment to transparency in UN governance.
The official appointment is expected before the end of 2026, following a recommendation by the Security Council and approval by the General Assembly.
