UNICEF Representative in Haiti, Ms. Geeta Narayan, met with the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Mr. Patrick Pélissier, as part of an important meeting focused on the situation of children and youth in detention.
The discussions highlighted the PREJEUNES program, as well as the conditions of children allegedly associated with armed groups at the CERMICOL detention center. Both parties also reviewed ongoing efforts to improve detention conditions and strengthen the protection of these children’s rights.
During the meeting, reflections were made on the need to anticipate urgent actions that may be required ahead of the deployment of the GSF, in order to ensure an approach that fully respects human rights and the best interests of children.
UNICEF reaffirmed its daily commitment to supporting the priorities of the Haitian Government, particularly all efforts related to the well-being of children and youth across the country.
