UNIPA News(Istanbul) 15 June-France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy on Monday welcomed a newly announced memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, describing it as a diplomatic breakthrough and calling for its swift and comprehensive implementation.
In a joint statement, the four European countries congratulated the United States, Iran and the mediators involved in the negotiations, including Pakistan and Qatar. The leaders said the agreement presents an opportunity to restore regional stability and support the global economy.
The statement stressed the need to conclude detailed negotiations and rapidly implement the accord. The four countries also expressed readiness to support the process.
The leaders called for the urgent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation, describing the move as essential for international maritime traffic and global energy supplies.
France, the UK, Germany and Italy said they were prepared to contribute to maritime security efforts, including through a strictly defensive and independent mission aimed at reassuring commercial shipping and conducting mine-clearance operations, subject to their respective constitutional requirements.
The four countries reiterated their position that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon and said they were ready to work with the United States, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure that objective is achieved. They also indicated a willingness to ease relevant sanctions if Iran takes clear and verifiable steps regarding its nuclear program.
The statement added that the four governments would continue coordinating with the United States, Iran and regional partners to advance a long-term diplomatic settlement. The leaders also reaffirmed support for Lebanon’s stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a robust ceasefire.
The reaction followed the announcement of a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the agreement was reached after intensive negotiations and that both sides had declared an immediate and permanent end to military operations across all fronts, including in Lebanon.
According to Sharif, the official signing ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 19 in Switzerland.
US President Donald Trump also announced that an agreement with Iran had been finalized and said he had authorized the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of a US naval blockade. He further signaled the resumption of maritime traffic and energy shipments through the strategic waterway.
