NAPLES, Italy 10 July(UNIPA News)-The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has surpassed 207 consecutive days at sea, setting a new record for the longest uninterrupted deployment by a U.S. aircraft carrier as it continues operations in the Middle East amid heightened regional tensions.
The carrier, deployed since late November, has remained on station in support of U.S. military operations in the Arabian Sea, including missions to safeguard maritime security in and around the Strait of Hormuz, protect commercial shipping, and support broader U.S. objectives related to Iran. During the deployment, the vessel has made only one brief port call in Guam.
The prolonged deployment has prompted growing concerns over the physical and mental well-being of the carrier’s approximately 5,000 sailors. Messages shared by crew members with their families have described increasing fatigue and emotional strain after months of continuous operations with limited opportunities for rest or direct contact with loved ones.
One sailor reportedly told family members that both the crew’s mental and physical health were under pressure and appealed for additional support. Relatives expressed concern that the extended operational tempo could contribute to serious mental health challenges among personnel.
Other members of the crew have also acknowledged the demands of the deployment. Lt. Cmdr. Alexis Travis, writing on social media, described the crew as exhausted but praised its resilience, professionalism, and commitment to completing its mission despite the sustained operational pressure.
Responding to concerns, U.S. Central Command said the health and welfare of deployed service members remain a priority. CENTCOM spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said personnel are receiving logistical support, medical care, and other resources necessary to operate in a forward-deployed environment, emphasizing that operational success depends on the well-being of military personnel.
USS Abraham Lincoln is one of more than 20 U.S. Navy vessels currently operating in the Middle East alongside thousands of sailors and Marines. The broader U.S. military presence in the region exceeds 50,000 personnel, according to CENTCOM.
Extended deployments without regular port visits are uncommon for U.S. aircraft carriers. Under normal circumstances, carriers typically make port calls every 30 to 45 days to conduct maintenance, replenish supplies, and provide sailors with time ashore. Previous exceptions have occurred during extraordinary circumstances, including the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 206-day deployment in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and its prolonged Red Sea operations in 2024, as well as the USS Theodore Roosevelt’s extended deployment following the September 11 attacks.
Concerns over quality of life aboard USS Abraham Lincoln have surfaced previously. Earlier reports highlighted complaints from some families regarding food availability during the deployment, allegations that the U.S. Navy disputed. Navy officials maintained that food services aboard deployed vessels met operational standards.
Crew members have also rejected suggestions that the hardships are simply part of military service, arguing that the unprecedented duration of the deployment presents unique challenges. They have called for greater understanding of the pressures facing deployed sailors and increased attention to mental health and quality-of-life issues during extended operations.
